Introduction to the Building Blocks

Introduction to the Building Blocks for Rhode Island Educators

This 30-minute free workshop will introduce Rhode Island educators and school leaders to the 10 Building Blocks of Equitable Remote Learning. The online framework, tool and workshop series are designed to support equitable remote and hybrid teaching and learning. In this workshop, educators will learn about:

  • The Building Blocks framework which identifies the 10 essential instructional elements for achieving high-quality teaching and learning amidst the challenges brought about by the COVID19 pandemic.
  • Within each element, state and national resources have been synthesized and organized to be easily discoverable so educators can quickly find the solutions and resources they need.
  • Attendees will also learn about our upcoming free workshops, which will take a deeper dive into individual topics within the Building Blocks, such as how to effectively engage learners and support the well-being of educators.

Engage Learners

Engage Learners

This 90-minute highly interactive workshop will assist Teaching and Learning workgroups, teachers and school leaders in their planning efforts. Participants will explore the 10 Building Blocks framework, with a particular emphasis on the Engage Learners Block. Come ready to participate by working alongside other educators to:

  • Explore strategies to build, deepen, and understand student engagement in remote, hybrid, and in person learning models;
  • Take a deep dive with peers on the challenges and opportunities provided by different state and district guidance;
  • Create actionable goals for your specific context;
  • Work with and learn from peers in small break-out sessions;
  • Access examples from other districts as well as related resources; and
  • Learn how the 10 Building Blocks can help support your work for those critical first six weeks of school.

Engage Learners Deeper Learning Secondary & Elementary

This workshop will dive deeper into this content, with a special emphasis on age group context. Please sign up for the session that best fits your context. These are open to all educators, including teachers and support staff. You do not need to have participated in a previous Engage Learners session to learn from this workshop.

Support Parents

Support Parents

This 90-minute highly interactive workshop will provide Rhode Island district and school leaders with the information they need to prioritize family support in the Fall Reopening planning and implementation process. Participants will engage deeply with the Support Parents Block of the 10 Building Blocks Framework. Come ready to participate by working alongside your district and state colleagues to:

  • Create a plan to help support parents and families in their new role in remote learning;
  • Identify communication priorities for parents, families, and guardians;
  • Work with and learn from peers in small break-out sessions; and
  • Access curated resources and district examples. 

Facilitated by Windy Lopez-Aflitto of Learning Heroes. Windy is a former elementary school teacher, and brings 20 years of experience in family engagement, education and philanthropy. Previously, Windy was with Scholastic for nearly a decade helping to develop family and community engagement initiatives.

Prepare Educators

Prepare Educators

This highly interactive 60-minute workshop will explore the Prepare, Support, and Collaborate with Educators Building Block. This interactive session will enable district and school leaders to:

  • Support the professional development and personal well-being of educators;
  • Explore how the model for teacher support and preparation should reflect the model for student support and instruction that is desired;
  • Understand how designing for the margins can ensure an equitable strategy to teacher support and preparation;
  • Work with and learn from peers in interactive, small break-out sessions; and
  • Hear from a Massachusetts educator on their strategies to Prepare and Support Educators and learn more about what they have discovered in that process.

Support Educator Well-Being

This highly interactive 60-minute workshop will lead school and district leaders through steps to be able to support the development and well being of educators. Specifically, it will explore the bucket Support Development and Well-Being, within the  Prepare, Support, and Collaborate with Educators Building Block. This interactive session will enable district and school leaders to:

  • Learn from a national expert and work with and learn from peers in interactive, small break-out sessions; 
  • Discuss strategies to provide continuous support and professional development of educators;
  • Discuss strategies to ensure educators can take care of their mental well being and support one another;
  • Learn how to incorporate opportunities for educators to collaborate and share best practices.
